They have sent reels to us here in Sweden to test in cold water.  And they
are always interested in feed back and improving their products. They even
have a email list where design features are discussed between "test divers".
So EE products are well tested for cold water i can assure you.

Kevin & All,
  A lot of EE equipment DOES get tested in cold water before release to the
general public;
  and as you said feedback from those who are diving in colder conditions.
