Oliver,
I second the motion, "I'M GLAD YOUR WITH US"
In answering your request to compare the profile of your dives with a
computer program I ran into a few problems. One is the multi level
nature of the last 19 minutes of your first dive. The profile I will
use will be a simple 170' for 12 min. using a safety factor of 110%.
This adjusts the Buhlmann time to 13.2 min. The software program used
is DrX. ,"Sheck Exley", 5.03, Licensed to this user.
I will show your first dive profile followed by the square DrX profile.
I find that except for a 2 min. stop you did at 80', your deco for the
first dive was in fact within safety standards. ( please don't ask who's
standards, I and may others have done mix to 300'+, closer to the edge
than this dive) The second dive is the BIG SURPRISE!
Your dive 1,
time depth status
(min) (ft)
0 0 start dive. computer clean.
descend quickly to max depth.
2 160 level off.
6 170 drift down then up.
12 160 start ascent ~40 fpm.
computer indicates 11 min deco starting at 30'.
14 80 level off for 2 minutes at "deep stop".
16-24 80-40 sight-seeing while slowly ascending.
computer stays at 11 min deco.
24-25 40 wait till clear 30 foot stop on computer.
ascend ~45fpm.
25-27 30 wait till clear 20 foot stop on computer.
ascend ~45fpm.
27-29 20 pause at 20'.
29-43 17-12 slowly ascend towards 10' stop.
clear deco requirement at ~39 min.
43-48 25-10 swim to shore along bottom. moderate exertion.
48 0 end dive. exit onto beach.

The amount of narcosis (END) at 170 fsw is: 170 fsw.
Decompression from 170 fsw up is on air, except that:
Surface breathing rates are: swimming = 0.7cf per min.
decompression = 0.5cf per min.
Descent rate should not exceed 75 fsw per min.
Ascend at 33 fsw per min. to first stop.
Deco safety factor is 110% (adjusted Buhlmann time is 13.2 min.).
Travel time between stops at 33 fsw per min. is included in the next
stop time.

Oliver, as you can see you were close to the above on your deco. I
also used some DCIEM multi level tables and factored in the last 19 min.
of your dive. This method again gave you a safe profile.
Now as Paul Harvey would say "this is the rest of the story." Dive 2.
I wish I knew what computer would figure your ceiling and deco time for
each stop on the first dive, and at the same time not be able to
calculate a repetitive dive. I think a lot of us reading your story
would like to know the name of this unit!
Please study the profile on your second dive. For 32 min. you went from
40' to 60 ' to 40' , then from 40' to 15' in a period of 10 min. , at
42 min. you broke surface. SEE BELOW:
One hour to 1.25 hour surface interval between dives. My second dive
profile was as follows:
time depth status
(min) (ft)
0 0 swim out and start dive.
computer indicates 45 min available at 60'.
1 40 quick descent to 40'.
1-32 40-60-40 slow profile from 40' down to 60 and up to 40'.
computer never indicates <12 min remaining till
deco during dive.
32-42 40-15 swim to shore along gently sloping bottom.
moderate exertion.
42 0 end dive. exit to beach.
Again I had to go to the DCIEM multi level tables to get an average I
could use for a square profile using DR.X. I came up using a figure of
45' for 42 min. ( for you math pros out there I may be + or - 10%, but
I was attempting to get only close. You can go 10% in either direction
and this dive will still send you to the chamber) Remember I have my
program adjusted to 110% , I ran it at 80% and Oliver would have still
bent!

Oliver, yes that is 2 hours and 23 min. of deco.
"Now, you know the rest of the story". I have a request to the rest
my cave, and deep diving friends. I would like you to run this on
"Abyss" and the others to see how close we come. Remember this is an AIR
only dive, no mix!
In closing I won't get into the drinking and diving hung over, "D A N "
has some information in this area. It sounds like you know the effects
on the body and tried to hydrate yourself. I have been around the
Tech. community long enough to know if those of us without sin are to
cast the first stone, you won't get hit to much!, Take care Oliver
